Sister, Sister
Dannijo’s Danielle and Jodie Snyder eschewed the normal lookbook format for their Spring 2012 collection (which, they note, they can hardly keep in stock—especially the on-trend neon pieces), instead making a zine with industry insiders like ?uestlove, Mia Moretti, and Timo Weiland to show off their colorful baubles. As an extension of that project, the duo recently enlisted another pair of famous faces to model their Fallcollection—two of fashion’s most well-known siblings, Theodora and Alexandra Richards.
“We loved the idea of shooting sisters, as their dynamic and chemistry are really reflective of Jodie and I and their personalities really resonated with ours,” Danielle tells Style.com. “One [sister] is a bit more rocker and the other more classic, so we were really able to express the range of the collection through them.” Style.com has an exclusive first look at one of the shots (pictured), lensed by photographer Eric Ray Davidson. As for what they have up their sleeves (besides stacks of bracelets), the Snyder sisters report, “We have a few exciting projects that are in the works, but it’s too soon to tell. Stay tuned for our September fashion week experience; it will be our best yet.”

Moscow police detain 40 gays
MOSCOW (AP) — Gay activists tried to stage two demonstrations in Moscow on Sunday to demand the right to hold a gay pride parade in the Russian capital, but they were blocked first by Orthodox Christian opponents and then by police, who detained a total of about 40 people from both sides.
The gay activists first gathered outside the city council building, where a few scuffles occurred as their opponents tried to disrupt the demonstration, decrying homosexuality as a sin. After police broke up that protest, another group tried to stage a second protest at city hall, but once again police moved in and detained participants, including prominent gay rights activist Nikolai Alexeyev.
The majority of those detained were gay activists, but some of the Christian demonstrators also were pushed into police buses. Police said about 40 people were detained in all. Homosexuality was decriminalized in Russia in 1993, but anti-gay sentiment remains strong.
Activists
have long petitioned the Moscow government for permission to stage such a parade,
but have always been denied. Former Mayor Yuri Luzhkov described gay parades as
"satanic," while current Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has said he
disapproves of gay gatherings because they could offend the religious beliefs
of many Russians.
Gay activist Galina Kaptur criticized city authorities for treating homosexuality as a contagious disease that would be spread through society if gays were allowed to hold a parade. "It's as if they thought that if all left-handed people held a parade, then afterward everyone would become left-handed," Kaptur said. "This is wrong."
This month, Alexeyev became the first person convicted under a new law in St. Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city, which makes it a crime to spread "gay propaganda" among minors. Alexeyev was charged after he picketed St. Petersburg's city hall with a placard that said "homosexuality is not a perversion." He was fined 5,000 rubles (about $170).
The Russian
parliament is considering extending the measure nationwide, which gay activists
say would make it even easier to ban their public demonstrations.

Beyonce Shines At First Post-Baby Concert
It's the
return of Sasha Fierce!
Beyonce |
Beyonce took
to the stage at Revel resort in Atlantic City on Friday for her first concert
since giving birth to baby Blue Ivy in January.
Clad in a
one-of-a-kind, skin-baring Ralph & Russo design, the 30-year-old superstar
was in fine form for her triumphant return.
Beyonce
performed with incredible energy and stamina, according to The New York Times,
and treated fans to rousing versions of "Run the World (Girls),"
"Single Ladies," "Countdown" and "Halo," among others.
The show
lasted two hours, The NY Times reported, and included a quick home video flash
featuring Beyonce holding Blue Ivy.
And
Beyonce's not the only one working hard in the Knowles-Carter household -- her
husband, Jay-Z, will head back into the studio with Kanye West for a sequel to
their collaboration "Watch the Throne" according to Mike Dean, a
producer on the first album.
"I'm
working on the G.O.O.D. Music album, of course," Mike said in a new
interview with Quiet Lunch magazine. "And 'Watch The Throne 2' -- it's not
started yet, but it's coming."

Nigerian Model Ogunlaja Jimi Owobo speaks about the industry
South African Hottest and Most Booked Male Model popularly known as Jimi (Ogunlana Jimi Owobo) talks about the industry in the recent interview conducted by Ynaija which revealed his inspirations, business plans, challenges he saves as a male model and the grooming mistake he's ever made.
He is one model that is passionate about his profession since his early childhood, and has featured for brands such as Virgin Atlantic, Sandton Magazine, and Bank PHB.
He has worked in Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Angola, South Africa and around Europe. During an interview with a Nigerian web, he compared the fashion markets in Nigeria and South Africa quoting…
"SA Modeling is more professional and more exposed to international opportunities than what Nigeria used to be before I left West Africa. There's a chance to get ahead and succeed exceedingly not only in terms of jobs but also the monetary aspect. Here you can earn a living off modeling as opposed in Nigeria."
He also made a comparison betwrrn S.A., European and the American Modeling Industry.
"The major difference between the S.A. Modeling Industry and the European is probably the higher earning ability of the European due to the exchange rate of the currency. You make money outside Africa for the same job quality."
He went on to giving tips to aspiring new models
"Every aspiring model should always treat their individual lives significantly and never forget that education comes first in every face of this planet. It is much deeper than just having a pretty face."
Conducted Interview went as follow:
Q. How were you discovered?
A. I was discovered in Lagos in 2003 by a friend (Bose Efunuga) who was aware of my undying passion for modeling.
Q. How long have you had the desire to become a model?

A. I would someday love to be a show producer – organizing fashion shows and managing entertaining events, thereby giving young and aspiring models more opportunities and a great platform to showcase their individual talents.

White South African model causes uproar, loses contracts after sending racist Tweets
A recent racial outburst on twitter by Cape Town model, Jessica Leandra dos Santos Leandra, has been the subject of mainstream media reporting in the past 24-hours, reportedly causing an ‘outcry’ in South Africa’s fragile society still afflicted by its racial past.
Although noting that the incident may be viewed from the prism of race it is merely another example of how not to use social networking platforms.
After South African model Jessica Leandra dos Santos angrily tweeted about being allegedly harassed by a shop assistant yesterday, many were outraged at her choice of words.
The 20-year-old called the man a “kaffir” an extremely offensive racist slur, causing many in the country to demand she be held accountable for her tweet.
One quick-thinking Twitter user catalogued dos Santos’ tweets and many of the reactions from those in South Africa.
Dos Santos’ deleted the tweet and asked her followers to “forget it,” saying she sent it in anger in response to being harassed.
Unfortunately for dos Santos, folks did not just forget it. Instead they combed her tweets and found yet another instance when the model had something offensive to say about black South Africans (she later deleted that tweet as well).
After many complained, FHM South Africa stripped the model of her title as the winner of its 2011 model competition and they’ve also decided they will no longer work with dos Santos in the future.
FHM South Africa issued a statement cutting ties with dos Santos:
“We have removed all pictures of her from our website and will have nothing to do with her in future. FHM is a proudly South African magazine and say “No” to racism.”
Dos Santos’ main sponsor, diet company QuickTrim, also dropped her as their spokeswoman, citing her tweets.
“Due to the severity of the remarks by #JessicaLeandra #QuickTrimSA herewith ends our sponsorship to her with immediate effect!” the company tweeted.
Dos Santos issued an apology again asserting that she was merely “acting in pure anger and frustration at the time” of her tweets, but that she realizes that there is “no excuse” for using the k-word and will use this experience as a learning experience.
Whether or not dos Santos can resurrect her once-rising career remains to be seen, but one thing is sure: the tweets are ALWAYS watching, and people need to think before they tweet.

DRESS SENSE FOR THE WEEK | WHICH WILL YOU BE COMFY IN, BE IT SUMMER OR WINTER?
It's not easy to look
chic and fresh when you're in the middle of a summer meltdown. Some days
the mere mention of the word 'humidity' can make your hair frizz, your
make-up run and your clothes wrinkle.
Since most of us graduated
from school when dinosaurs roamed, we don't have the summer off. We have
to go to the office, boutique, street corner or wherever we make our living
all summer long. And we have to do it looking as put together as we do
when we can wear that blue wool blazer that goes with everything.
If you need to stock up on items for your summer fashion first-aid kit, read on.

LOOSE CLOTHING
Forget the "form-fitting" fashions. Retaining water is bad enough in the summer. Do you want to retain heat, too? Looser clothing are a better bet in the hottest months. It's logical. The less fabric that actually touches your body the cooler you'll feel. This doesn't mean that you have to wear a muumuu everywhere you go but the wider the sleeves and legs the better. This season, I rediscovered the knee-length skirt. It's very comfortable in my favorite summer fabrics -- cotton or silk. Even with a little lycra in the cotton, my legs are much cooler than in pants. Of course, with a little stretchy lycra it fits better, too. Trust me, skirts are cooler. Why do you think the guy in kilts is smiling?

THE LAYERED LOOK
How do you dress when it's chilly in the morning and blazing in the afternoon? Or when it's hot outside but there's icicles hanging off the office air-conditioner. You dress in layers. You probably only have one or two sweaters and they probably don't match very much in your closet. Rest assured. You can layer in style if you stick to your three basic colors and use every light jacket and Big Shirt that you possess. Twin sets are an excellent solution here. When the temperature blows hot and cold. You'll be ready.
SLEEVELESS
Sleeveless has been a fashion trend for years, even on brides. For all this time I have avoided going sleeveless. My arms will never be buff again. But having the pleasure of living in the hot, humid Florida summer, you gotta make a decision: I will wear sleeveless!! It's a more flattering look than short sleeves, which tend to hit at bust level. If you're a woman of a certain age, short sleeves can make you look matronly.

If you're uncomfortable
going sleeveless or if it's wrong for your workplace, then go with three-quarter
length sleeves. They're classy and still cooler.
STOCKINGS
If you grew up before pantyhose, you'll remember girdles, garter belts and hosiery. One of the best things about women's lib was burning it all! I love baring my legs to the breezes! In Europe and some extra-trendy U.S. circles, pantyhose are never worn, even in winter. (They don't shave their underarms either. That trendy I'll never get.) Many offices have relaxed the "no hose" policy. If you worry about pale legs, and are smart enough not to bake in the sun then get one of the many self-tanners out on the market. (See Skincare below.)

FABRICS
Synthetics, like polyester and rayon, do not breathe. Natural fabrics do. Think cotton, linen and silk. Of course, these are the ones that need the most ironing. Go with it. It's a time-honored trend! The wrinkled look! It's comfortable, casual (which summer fashion is all about) and you'll feel so much cooler. Besides, I love having more wrinkles on my clothes than on my face! Remember that most linings are made of synthetic fabrics. So, go for unlined fashions. I guarantee your body will be less glistening by the end of the day.

HATS
You can learn a thing or two from the southern belles in Gone with the Wind. First, never marry a man named Rhett. Second, wear a hat! The bigger the brim the better. Straw hats or baseball caps work the best. The idea is to keep the sun out of your eyes and off your face. Choose a hat that accentuates your outfit and mood. Are you feeling classy, trashy or fun?
SCARVES AND JEWELRY
Wear less jewelry in the summer. Metal gets hot! It's psychological, too. The less you wear, the cooler you'll feel. Try using accessories to give your wardrobe a more put together look when you're wearing lighter clothes.

SKINCARE
To tan or not to tan. The answer? Not. Skin cancer is on the increase in women in their teens and twenties. Use a sunblock with an SPF factor of 15 or higher and that blocks the harmful UVA and UVB rays. The Aussies have a saying - Slip! Slap! Slop! In English, that means to always slip on a shirt, slap on a hat and slop on some sun screen. Just do it. Most cosmetics companies have sunblocks in almost all of their product lines. Find the one and use it. If you don't want to look like a beached grouper all summer, try one of the self-tanners out on the market. Some don't even turn you orange anymore!

You might also have
to change your skincare routine. Even skin that gets dry in winter can
get a little oily in the summer. If your moisturizer becomes too much
in the summer, adjust it with a lighter one until fall.
MAKE-UP
Full face make-up is not in style any more (no matter what your age). It prevents your skin from breathing! And in the summer who wants caked make-up running down their face? Use a tinted moisturizer rather than a regular foundation. It will even out your skin tone and is so much lighter. If you want to wear foundation, use a non-mattifying make-up. It's less oily and keeps your face fresh. Wear as little powder as possible. Try just using it in the "t-zone" that might get a little oily.

FRAGRANCE
Keep your summer fragrance light and fresh. A cologne or toilet water spray with some of the new aromatherapy scents is perfect. You can always go back to your regular or a heavier perfume at first frost.

HAIR
If it's time for a new look, cut it shorter and see how much cooler you'll feel! If you don't want to cut it, wear it up off your neck and off your face. Even tucking it behind your ears makes your head feel cooler! Warning: Hair grows faster in the summer. So, you'll have to keep on top of your roots.

The hair under your
arms, on your legs and even your chin grows faster in summer. Whether
you shave, wax or use a weed whacker, you'll have to do it more often.
(Hint: Take your favorite pain reliever before a bikini wax. You'll be
glad you did.)
EXERCISE
If you exercise outside, then do it early in the morning or just before sunset (or switch to an inside activity when the sidewalks are melting). Wear clothing that is light and loose on sweltering days. Don't wear cotton. It soaks up the sweat and clings to you. Choose clothing made of special fabrics that "wick" the water away from your skin. It'll help you feel cooler. And wear visors or specially designed sports hats to block the sun. A regular hat or baseball cap will keep in the heat.

QUICK HEALTH TIPS
Drink lots of water. Consume less caffeine and alcohol. Eat more salads and seasonal fruits and less fatty foods. Carry a little battery-powered fan. They come in very handy for summer heat, hot flashes and cooling off a plate of nachos. Carry a water bottle for drinking and a spray bottle for misting. Move slowly. Stay calm. Meditate. Go to the beach … and take me with you!

Model with Purpose: Flaviana Matata donates 500 Life Vests to The Marine
1996 has been and still the worst memory year in the history of Tanzania. Sixteen years ago, the MV Bukoba sank in Lake Victoria and over 800 people died. It was a national tragedy but most importantly it was personal for me because I lost some friends that were dear to me and friends relatives. In this tragedy, the International Model and former Miss Universe Tanzania, Flaviana Matata , lost her mother when she was at a very young age. Though devastated as any child would be, Flaviana never looked back, she dedicated herself for the remembrance of her mother through different activities. On Monday 21st of May 2012, the sixteen year anniversary of the tragegy, Flaviana, through her foundation the Flaviana Matata Foundation (FMF) donated 500 life jackets to the Lake Victoria Zone Marine Services Co Ltd in memory of her mother and everyone who died in the tragedy.
Flaviana, thank you for your generosity. On behalf of Fashion Network Africa Blog and Our beloved readers, We say you are a true inspiration for others to follow. Your mother may not be with us but her gift of you is a blessing to humankind. May her soul rest in peace.
