Make-Up Artist Magazine Features Michael Jackson Retrospective

Following the recent death of Michael Jackson, Make-Up Artist magazine’s next issue will feature a retrospective of the King of Pop, featuring interviews with a number of make-up artists who worked with Jackson over the past three decades, as well as some exclusive, never-before-published photos.

The story—‘The Many Faces of Michael Jackson’—goes back to 1978 when the then-19 year-old singer appeared as the Scarecrow in a big-screen version of The Wiz. “He was very quiet and shy,” remembered Michael Thomas, who worked as Jackson’s make-up artist on the film for two and a half months, “and very much to himself but he seemed to be a happy kid. He used to say that whatever he was working on at the time, that was the most important thing in his life, and he would devote all of his energy and concentration to whatever project he was working on.”

The most celebrated Jackson video of all time may well be the 1983 horror-music extravaganza “Thriller,” which permanently transformed the music-video format. It was also a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the young make-up artists who worked on the project, some of them still new to the business.

“It’s so energizing to see it again,” said Tony Gardner, who joined the crew as a runner before working on his own characters and ultimately appearing as a featured zombie. “I have nothing but positive memories of that time. I was only 19 at the time, but ‘Thriller’ helped me decide what I wanted to do with my life.”

Another major project was Ghosts, a half-hour haunted house epic directed by Stan Winston, who had designed the special make-ups for The Wiz two decades earlier. “He was one of the best actors I’ve ever had in the make-up chair,” said Mike Smithson, who transformed Jackson into two different characters for the project. “He let me do whatever I needed to do and never complained, so it was a really good experience.”

For exclusive Jackson material, see the full story in Make-Up Artist magazine #79, on newsstands July 15, or you may order it here: http://makeupmag.com/issues/id/922/.

Marc Jacobs on Dior rumors: I've still too much to do at Vuitton

Marc Jacobs has firmly closed the lid on the past rumors of a move to Christian Dior, explaining he still has "so much more to do" at Louis Vuitton.
Speaking to British newspaper The Telegraph January 9, Jacobs readdressed past reports he would be replacing former head designer John Galliano at Dior, after the latter was dismissed in March 2011 following his arrest at a Paris bar for racist and anti-Semitic behavior.
While Jacobs was flattered to be considered by LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault for the position, the designer reaffirmed his status at Louis Vuitton, arguing he still has plenty of ambitions for the fashion house he has helmed since 1997.
"It's a great honor to be considered, and Mr Arnault is a super intelligent man and a very smart man and it was certainly a very great honor for him to know that I was capable -- and not only capable but that I am someone that he would have wanted for the job.
"But I am very happy to be here. There is so much more left to do and building Louis Vuitton into a fashion company is something nobody else can say they really started," explained the creator.
"I am really happy and I do love working here. I just think there is so much more to do."
Just some of the expansion to come from Louis Vuitton includes the label's first standalone fine jewelry store, which will be unveiled in Paris's Place Vendome this month. It was also announced January 4 that the brand is planning its first fragrance since the 1930s, with master perfumer Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud heading up the scent development.
Meanwhile, the most recent name associated with the Christian Dior head designer job is Belgian creator Raf Simons, with an article published in WWD last month claiming the fashion house was finalizing his contract. Other fashion heavyweights linked to the position in the past include Phoebe Philo, Riccardo Tisci and Alber Elbaz.

Milan Menswear Fashion Week: Designers offer peek into inspirations

With Milan Menswear Fashion Week set to kick off January 14, a host of designers due to appear at the event have revealed their inspirations for Fall/Winter 2012.
Speaking to WWD January 12, creators from fashion houses including Diesel Black Gold and Nicole Farhi have discussed the ideas behind the yet-to-be-seen looks, which range from retro cuts to Asian dandies.
Ermenegildo Zegna and Pringle of Scotland's collections appear to have more practical motivations, with the latter's designer Alistair Carr explaining the upcoming menswear line is "inspired by a real man's wardrobe and the pieces he wants to wear."
Meanwhile, Zegna's image director Anna Zegna stressed the importance of versatility in the upcoming line, providing "incredible combinations between formal and sporty pieces."
Diesel Black Gold's creative team spoke of edgier inspirations, citing "military constructions," "vintage biker pieces" and "1970s-style cuts" as sources of inspiration, while Farhi's Massimo Nicosia hinted at more exotic motivations with the theme "West meets East."
