Week Best-Dressed | Lea Michele, Kate Beckinsale, and Jessica Biel.

Lea Michele

On Sunday evening, Lea Michele looked sexier than ever upon arriving at the star-studded 2012 Do Something Awards in Santa Monica, California. The "Glee" actress -- who decided to show off both her decolletage and toned stems -- sauntered down the blue carpet in a breathtaking, Giorgio Armani-designed dress, which featured an off-white hue, plunging neckline, and ruffle-enhanced hem. Lea's lovely accessories included metallic Jenni Kayne sandals and statement earrings courtesy of Samira 13. (8/19/2012)

Kate Beckinsale
Also spotted looking stellar this week was Kate Beckinsale, who delivered effortless elegance in a sequined Donna Karan showstopper and Salvatore Ferragamo satin pumps at the U.K. premiere of "Total Recall." The action flick may have bombed at the U.S. box office, but that hasn't stopped Kate from looking "totally" gorgeous during the promotional tour. (8/16/2012)

Christian Louboutin reveals science behind perfect high heel

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Christian Louboutin shoes coveted by ordinary women and celebrities
  • But each shoe is a feat of custom engineering
  • Soles are specially cushioned for extra comfort
  • Heels can reach 6.5 inches, but designer says the sky is the limit
Paris (CNN) -- His name is synonymous with high fashion and even higher heels.
Christian Louboutin is the Parisian shoe designer whose skyscraper heels are coveted by women all over the world, and eulogized in popular culture by the likes of Jennifer Lopez, who sings a song about them.
But behind each trademark red-soled shoe is a feat of custom engineering. "The heel is engineering in itself," said the sought-after designer in his Paris atelier. "This little thing that supports the human weight has to have a precise balance."
The materials needed to create the perfect shoe include wood lasts -- a shoemaker's mould in the shape of a human foot -- and supporting metal stems that are inserted into heels, which can measure up to 6.5 inches, to ensure that the wearer doesn't topple over.
"If you just look at the heel, you are immediately going to see that if there was not the (right) engineering), it would break," the designer told CNN.

"If it is not exactly inside the center of gravity position, inside the gravity line, the weight would make you flip out behind, or the weight would make you break the heel and (fall forwards)," he said.
But even with heels measuring just two inches, these metal points still need to be inserted into the heel to perfect the balance of the wearer.
"I wouldn't say it is an art," he said, but does admit that "it is complicated."
Louboutin was born in Paris in 1964 and was drawn to footwear from an early age. One of his earliest memories is seeing a sign prohibiting the wearing of stiletto heels in a Paris museum -- warning of potential damage to the wood floors.
In 1992 he set up his own label, and his shoes, which cost on average $700 a pair, are now stocked in high-end stores across the world. Celebrities and fashion editors love his creations. According to Terresa Cannata, writing for Italian Vogue, "His creations are sexy and original, some playful, some definitely classic."
Louboutin's career has taken some unexpected turns, including interning as a teenager at the Folies Bergere music hall theater in Paris. The experience was instrumental to the development of his design aesthetic.
"The shoe is so important because it shows the posture," he said of the footwear worn by showgirls. "It has to be comfortable ... but it has to give the perfect shape and elongate the legs to the maximum."

--Christian Louboutin, shoe designer

The influence of these showgirls remains evident in his flamboyant and vertiginous designs, and he even named a stiletto shoe after the infamous Paris area of Pigalle, home to dancing girls and the Moulin Rouge.
But his influences are wide-ranging and the embellishments on his shoes are inspired by design motifs as diverse as fish scales, Masai beads and spider webs. The actual build of his shoes, he said, is architecturally inspired and he cites the fluid and seemingly gravity-defying buildings of Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer as an important influence.
Though his shoes are often worn by women who want to be noticed, particularly celebrities including singers Beyonce, Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez, and actresses Gwyneth Paltrow and Sarah Jessica Parker, Louboutin says the ideal shoe is one that is able to "appear and disappear."
By that, he means a pair of shoes that grab the attention of the beholder but also flatter the figure of the wearer to the point that the shoes "vanish with the silhouette."
And he believes that there is no point wearing a shoe that makes you suffer, however beautiful. Though his shoes are specially cushioned to protect wearers from pain wrought by pressure on the balls and arches of the feet, he also believes that all women are different and so have different pain thresholds.
But as long as women continue to covet his designs he maintains that the sky is the limit in terms of what he can design. "For me there ain't no high heel high enough," he said.

"CBP maintains an aggressive and proactive posture on intercepting shipments containing counterfeit and pirated items," CBP Director of Field Operations in Los Angeles Todd C. Owen said.
Five shipments were seized at the Los Angeles/Long Beach seaport on July 27 and August 14, the CPB release said.
"Often available on illegitimate websites and underground outlets, counterfeit high fashion commodities multiply the illegal profits of smugglers and traffickers," the agency said. "The public is misguided into believing they are buying an original product at a significant discount."

I think fat-free food is not always cool - Here are 8 whys

Take the fat out of these foods and you could be risking your health.Take the fat out of these foods and you could be risking your health.
When you’re at the grocery store and two options are staring you down—one that says “reduced fat” and one that’s unapologetically full-fat—choosing the less fattening option is a no-brainer, right? Not so fast!
“Just because a product is labeled ‘fat-free’ or ‘lowfat’ doesn't mean it’s healthier or even lower in calories,” says Jared Koch, a nutritionist in New York and the founder of Clean Plates. “In fact, most lowfat or fat-free foods will have sugar and chemicals to make up for the loss in taste, which renders them poor nutritional choices.”
Plus, our bodies need healthy fat in our food to keep our cell walls strong, absorb important vitamins and regulate our hormones. Taking away that fat and adding in chemicals can have another unexpected result: Franken-foods that don’t cook the way they should, or crumble up when they shouldn’t. Here are eight full-fat foods that are actually better for you than their reduced-fat or nonfat relatives.
Salad Dressing
Salad Dressing You might think that a salad filled with low-calorie, lowfat veggies would find its match in a low-calorie, lowfat dressing. The opposite is true, though.
Researchers from Purdue University found that while fat-free dressings are lower in calories than fat-based dressings, they block absorption of fruits’ and veggies’ nutrients, like carotenoids which protect your body’s cells. According to the study, dressings with monounsaturated fats (from canola and olive oil, for instance) boosted the absorption of the veggies’ carotenoids. Dressings made with polyunsaturated fat (from soybean oil) and saturated fat (from plain old butter) helped absorption, too, but it takes more dressing to reap the rewards.
Don’t use this info as an excuse to smother your salad in high-fat dressing—just 1/5 tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil drizzled onto a salad is enough to get the best out of veggies.

Moon between Olympic rings makes for breathtaking London photographs (GALLERY)

(Reuters)
A full moon made for a beautiful sixth Olympic ring on Friday night, when a Reuters photographer snapped a breathtaking picture of the moon positioned between a large set of Olympic rings hanging from the top of London's Tower Bridge.
The shots were an instant hit on Twitter, with fans retweeting them thousands of times within an hour of posting.
Photographer Luke MacGregor also snapped photos with the moon positioned between one of the rings and hovering above and below the famed London span.

The pictures provided an opportunity to crack a few jokes about the IOC and its stringent policies that prohibit illicit use of the rings. In this case, the moon should be expecting a cease and desist letter from the IOC for infringing upon its trademark. Neil Armstrong will also be named in the suit.
